Minnesota Nutrition Conference announces 2013 program

(AP) North Dakota Farmers Union officials say they want to keep nutrition programs in the new farm bill. The legislation is currently at a standstill. The Democrat-controlled Senate approved a bipartisan five-year bill to govern ag programs and food stamps. The Republican-controlled House wants to put nutrition programs into a separate measure in order to seek deeper cuts to food stamps. The House has refused to name its negotiators. North Dakota Farmers Union president Woody Barth says linking the bill to nutrition programs is important to family farmers and ranchers.

Healthy diet in diabetes tied to less kidney disease

People in the study had an average diet score of 24.6, with a range of 9.8 to 66.2. Over the next five and a half years, about 32 percent of study participants developed kidney disease and eight percent died. Oberbauer and his colleagues found that participants who scored in the top one-third for overall diet were 26 percent less likely to be diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and 39 percent less likely to die during the study period than those in the bottom one-third. That was after taking into account their age, gender and how long each person had had diabetes.

Staying active and eating right is the best way to glow throughout the colder months (even if all you want to do is curl up in bed and hibernate). Bundle up and go for a run through your local park or, if you can’t face the biting cold, nip to the nearest gym to supercharge your skin. When it comes to eating throughout the day, don’t starve yourself with fad diets. Eat regular, healthy meals that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids (walnuts, flax-seed, fish, soybeans, tofu) and vitamins A, C, and E (cheese, eggs, yoghurt, oranges, red peppers, strawberries, broccoli, spinach, sunflower seeds, almonds). And don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated! No Skincare Step Skipping! Okay, so we’ve all been guilty of rolling into bed with make-up still plastered to our face.
